Adenoids

Adenoids

What are adenoids?

Adenoids are small masses of lymphoid tissue located high up behind the nose (in the nasopharynx). They are part of the immune system and help fight infections, especially in children.

Role / Function:

Trap germs entering through the nose

Help build immunity in early childhood

Common problems (Enlarged adenoids):

When adenoids become enlarged or infected, they can cause:

Nasal blockage

Mouth breathing

Snoring

Sleep disturbance / sleep apnea

Recurrent cold & cough

Ear infections, ear pain, or hearing difficulty

Nasal speech

Causes of enlargement:

Repeated infections

Allergies

Chronic sinusitis

Environmental irritants (dust, pollution, smoke)

Diagnosis:

Clinical examination

X-ray nasopharynx (lateral view)

Nasal endoscopy (if required)

Management:

Medical treatment: anti-allergic measures, nasal sprays, homoeopathic treatment

Surgery (adenoidectomy): only in severe or recurrent cases

Here are commonly used homoeopathic remedies for Adenoids, selected based on symptom totality (not routine prescription):

🌿 Homoeopathic Remedies for Adenoids

  1. Agraphis nutans
  2. Baryta carbonica
  3. Calcarea carbonica
  4. Tuberculinum
  5. Silicea
  6. Sambucus nigra
  7. Calcarea phosphorica

Do’s and Don’ts for Adenoids (Enlarged Adenoids)

✅ Do’s

Encourage nasal breathing (keep nose clear with saline drops/spray)

Give warm fluids (water, soups, herbal teas) to soothe throat

Use a humidifier/steam inhalation to reduce dryness and congestion

Maintain good hydration throughout the day

Ensure proper sleep position — slightly elevated head helps breathing

Promote hand hygiene to prevent infections

Offer soft, nutritious foods (khichdi, dal, fruits, vegetables)

Consult a doctor if symptoms persist (snoring, mouth breathing, ear issues)

❌ Don’ts

Avoid cold, iced, or very chilled foods/drinks

Limit junk, fried, and sugary foods (can increase inflammation/mucus)

Do not ignore persistent snoring or sleep disturbance

Avoid exposure to smoke, dust, and pollution

Do not force nose blowing (may worsen ear pressure)

Avoid self-medication, especially repeated antibiotics without advice

Limit screen time before bed (poor sleep worsens symptoms)

⚠️ Important Note:

Homoeopathic medicines should be selected after complete case taking (age, constitution, thermal reaction, mental & physical generals). Potency & dosage must be decided by a qualified homoeopathic physician.
